Informational Interview

Definition

An informational interview is a brief, informal conversation—typically 15 to 30 minutes—between a job seeker and a professional in their target field or company. The purpose is not to ask for a job but to gather specific intelligence about the role, team, culture, and hiring process. In 2026, informational interviews have become one of the most effective strategies for bypassing the ATS entirely, as they can lead to internal referrals that skip the automated screening queue.

Why it matters

Referral-based applications convert to interviews at 5 to 10 times the rate of cold applications submitted through job boards. An informational interview builds the relationship that leads to a referral. It also provides insider knowledge about what the hiring manager actually cares about—information that cannot be extracted from a job description alone. This intelligence makes every subsequent application dramatically more targeted.

How CareerWin Uses It

CareerWin generates networking outreach copy as part of the Tailored Application Package system. When targeting a specific company, the system produces a brief, evidence-based outreach message designed for LinkedIn or email that references the candidate's relevant career evidence and asks specific, intelligent questions about the role. This approach signals competence and genuine interest rather than generic networking.

Practical Example

A product manager targeting a fintech company uses CareerWin to generate a LinkedIn message to a Director of Product at the target company. The message references a specific payments infrastructure project from her Master Work Record and asks about the team's current approach to regulatory compliance tooling. The director responds within a day, leading to a 20-minute call that results in an internal referral.
